New Album: Place Your Bets
About Jules's album “Place Your Bets”
Influenced by an eclectic range of artists from Carole King to Nancy Wilson, via Stevie Wonder, Joan Armatrading, Diana Krall and others, Jules Blyth writes from the heart about ‘life stuff’ and her take on the world with catchy melodies and richly-textured vocal harmonies.
She accompanies herself with jazz-style piano, and is joined on the album by her partner Will on bass guitar and cello. Some tracks also feature their daughter JoJo on sax, playing ethereal solos which soar above the vocal. She and Will are gigging around Oxford showcasing their music to local jazz and singer/songwriter enthusiasts.
Having loved piano and singing from a young age she grabbed any opportunity to play, be it at home for pleasure or within her role as a teacher and later on finding ways to bring music to her work as a midwife. She remembers at a recent home birth, itching to get her hands on the piano to soothe the labouring woman in her birth pool!
Re-examining her life after a breast cancer diagnosis in 2019, she decided to make some changes and focus more on songwriting and music. The songs which make up her forthcoming album “Place Your Bets” are a mix of ballads and up-tempo catchy tunes with a strong hook, some with sax or piano solo.
